CADEL EVANS BEATS ALBERTO CONTADOR TO WIN THE FLECHE WALLONNE

22/04/2010

World champion cyclist Cadel Evans has won the Fleche Wallonne, a one-day classic in Belgium, ahead of Spanish rival Alberta Contador.

Chasing his first win since last year’s UCI World Road Championship, Evans motored past Contador in the final 100 metres to snatch victory and his first Fleche-Wallonne, a title no other Australian has won in the event’s 74-year history.

"As I'm riding in the Giro (Tour of Italy) I've had a different approach. I'm happy with my progress, but I can still improve further," said Evans, who has tweaked his training programme this year.

Evans will now start favourite ahead of Sunday’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

"That's that negative side to my victory - now everybody's going to be watching out for me!"
