EVANS KICK STARTS SEASON WITH TOP FIVE RESULT
01/03/2010
Current world road cycling champion Cadel Evans has begun his European season with a fifth placing at the 181km GP Insubria.
The one-day race came down to a thrilling finale with Evans and 11 other riders in a sprint to the finish line. Evans was made to ride around race officials before crossing in fifth, behind winner Frenchman Samuel Dumoulin.
"Sam Dumoulin won it deservingly - I would have preferred not to have to dodge the race officials standing on the road with 300m to go, looking the other way, grrr," Evans wrote on his website.
"That's racing, tomorrow is another day.
"I came here without any great ambitions for a result.
"Primarily I was most interested in riding with some of the (BMC) team-mates I haven't raced with yet like Florian Stalder, Steve Morabito and Brent Bookwalter."
Evans' first major European race will be the March 10-16 Tirreno Adriatico.
